Material properties and conditions

A513 is a product specification, not a single material-property value. Type, grade, chemistry, condition, size, and processing all matter.

The short answer

There is no such thing as “the strength of A513 tubing.” The specification covers a range of carbon and alloy grades (commonly ordered examples include 1008/1010 and 1020/1026 families), in multiple conditions, across manufacturing types whose cold work changes mechanical response. The applicable values live in the current official standard and the producer's certification for your specific order — not in a generic web table.

For design work, obtain the standard, state the grade and condition on the order, and design to certified properties for the product you will actually receive.

Avoid universal property claims

Do not use a generic web value as a design allowable. Obtain the applicable requirements from the current standard and confirm certified results, condition, and test orientation for the ordered product.

Web tables that quote a single yield strength for “DOM tubing” or “A513” are describing one grade in one condition at best. Treat them as orientation, never as acceptance or design data.

Processing changes response

Cold work and heat treatment can affect strength, ductility, residual stress, hardness, formability, and machining behavior. Welding, bending, swaging, and coating may introduce additional constraints.

The same chemistry drawn to Type 5 in the as-drawn condition and supplied stress-relieved will behave differently in a bending fixture and a lathe. State the condition; do not let it default.

Communicating property requirements

If the application needs specific mechanical properties, specify them explicitly — including test method, orientation, and frequency — rather than assuming a grade name implies them. Where formability matters, discuss flattening, flaring, or flange tests with the producer. Where hardness matters for machining, say so on the order.
