Minimum ordering information
A useful order identifies edition, type, grade or chemistry, condition, shape, dimensions, length, quantity, tolerances, tests, certifications, end use, and any supplementary requirements.
Stating the end use is not bureaucracy — it lets an experienced producer flag a mismatch between the ordered product and the application before steel is committed.
A sensible specification sequence
Work from the part backward: finished-part critical characteristics first, then the manufacturing type that can deliver them, then grade and condition, then dimensions and tolerances, then verification (tests and certificates). Orders written in this sequence rarely contain the internal contradictions that written-from-memory orders do.
Before you release the order
Reconcile the builder output against the drawing's title block, the official standard's requirements for your chosen type, and the supplier's quotation. Any requirement the quotation is silent about is a requirement you have not actually bought.
